Back Pain Overview
Back pain is a condition which is caused by straining, tearing, or displacing one of the components of the lumbar system. The pain can be sharp or a dull throb and take up to a couple weeks to disappear. While not completely unavoidable, the chances of suffering from back pain decrease with a non-sedentary lifestyle. However, approximately 100 million Americans suffer from a more severe form of back pain called chronic back pain, which is characterized by long-term, recurring pain that may remain despite medical treatment and even surgery.
What is Lumbar Arthritis?
Lumbar arthritis is an over-arching term for chronic back pain that typically involves pain in the five lower spinal discs and is often caused by spinal bone conditions such as osteoarthritis and psoriatic arthritis. Common symptoms include:
- Loss of range in motion
- Creaking sounds from affected bones
- Muscle spasms
- Back stiffness upon waking
While it is often caused by hereditary conditions, other factors may affect someone’s likelihood of developing this chronic condition, including:
- Age
- Obesity
- Activity level
- Diet
- Occupation
What is Degenerative Disc Disease?
Degenerative Disc Disease is a chronic back condition which is characterized by the degeneration of the cushioning around the spinal discs. It can lead to misalignment of the spine, development of bone “spurs”, and the pinching of the spinal nerve. Common symptoms include:
- A dull, prolonged pain that periodically flares up
- An increase in pain from movements like bending, twisting, or lifting
- Sensation of tingling or numbness
- Pain radiating from the affected area to other parts of the body
The most common cause of this condition is aging, and there are some people who never experience adverse symptoms. However, left untreated, Degenerative Disc Disease can cause serious complications, so it is best to come in for a consultation if back pain occurs and does not go away after an extended period of time.
Treatment options
We offer Chiropractic care, Decompression therapy and Cold Laser therapy for these conditions. All are non-invasive treatment options for chronic back conditions.
Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) & function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. Read our FAQs.
Cold Laser or Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) utilizes specific wavelengths of light to interact with tissue in your body to help speed up the healing process. Patients suffering from a wide variety of chronic and acute conditions have see a reduction in pain, swelling, muscle spasms and a truly noticeable improvement in range of motion.
We offer free consultations to help our patients determine which therapies are the best options. Contact us today.
